Holiday Style Inspiration from Our Fashion Director
Balancing festive holiday style with winter weather can be tricky. Sure, it’s easy to toss on a slinky dress and heels, but let's face it - when the weather calls for -5°C with a chance of flurries, it's tempting to change your RSVP to "I have a date with my couch". That’s where smart layering becomes your new favourite plus one. Strategic layers will carry you through your holiday social calendar while keeping you warm, dry, and beautifully styled. No one knows holiday style trends better than our very own Fashion Director, Katrina Fekete. Below, she shares what she’s wearing this holiday season. Consider this your holiday style bible when it comes to celebrating with family and friends.
Fluffy Texture
Don't let your outerwear spoil a perfectly chic holiday party outfit. At Hill's Dry Goods, we take outerwear seriously but know how to have fun with it. Finding a beautiful coat doesn't have to come at the expense of function. This season’s holiday style is all about fluffy, furry, touchable texture. The fluffier, the better! Whether it’s sherpa, fun fur, shearling, feathers, or boucle, it’s all about creating visual interest with fabric and texture and having fun with your layers.
You can tap into this holiday style essential with something as simple as a furry collar detail. I love this recycled-leather trench from Lamarque. The removable collar makes it an easy piece to transition between seasons, and the silhouette takes you effortlessly into spring while still complementing your holiday style wardrobe.
Of course, our trusty No.6 always delivers amazing textured outerwear, like this reversible vegan leather and shearling style. If you want to go all in, my top pick is the Lamarque Darelle Oversized Faux Fur Maxi Coat. This teddy-style faux-fur coat has a rich colour and plush texture that feels elevated and put-together, an effortless (and cozy!) way to enhance your holiday style.
If you would rather try the trend in a subtle, playful way, bring it into your accessories. This bowling bag from MargeSherwood or this cutie from GANNI, are both fun, wearable options that add softness and personality to any holiday party look.
High Boots
High boots are a cornerstone of holiday style this year, whether they are suede, Western-inspired, or sleek leather (suede is especially having a moment). Consider these an investment piece. They are an easy way to bring texture into your wardrobe and transition you beautifully into spring. High suede boots pair effortlessly with shorter dresses, skirts, or shorts. The options are endless.
For fall and winter, I love a high boot with a slinky slip dress or skirt layered under an oversized knit. It’s the perfect accessory to elevate your holiday style, especially when paired with coloured tights. I love this particular combination of colour and texture. Speaking of tights, this is a trend that shows no signs of slowing down. They’re a reliable go-to for adding a fresh pop of colour or element to any outfit. As a bonus they offer protection from the elements so you can bare those gams. This season, I’m wearing these Hansel from Basel Chocolate Brown tights to complement my festive look.
For tall boots, look no further than Staud. My top pick is the Wally for how incredibly comfortable they are, especially in the beautiful mahogany suede. The Western Wally taps into the ongoing brown trend and makes for an easy base colour. Brown is a super chic base colour paired with an all-black outfit. The leather Wally is another great option, featuring a wider shaft that’s easy to slip on and off.
Both styles can be dressed up with a midi dress (like this one from Staud) or dressed down with a skirt. My top choice this season is the recycled leather Cassia Skirt from Citizens of Humanity- an ideal foundation for elevated festive look.
Novelty Knits
Among the sea of basics this season, novelty knitwear is having a moment- and it blends perfectly into fresh, expressive holiday style. Whether it’s a pop of colour, unique texture, unexpected pattern, or standout silhouette, it’s the perfect piece for winter layering and a clever way to add a conversation piece to your wardrobe.
One of my favourites is the Staud Giada Dolly sweater. It’s so cute and features a textured sheep motif. And yes… I’d absolutely get the matching Staud Clutch and wear it all with a slinky skirt or the leather number from Citizens of Humanity mentioned above.
Howlin’ also has great options for bold, playful and colourful designs. I'll take this one and this cardigan in every colour please! Another trend that is still going strong is Nordic knitwear. is there anything cozier and more festive than a Fair Isle sweater? Whether you're hitting the slopes, apres ski or staying fireside this season, Fair Isle is everywhere and I’m loving it. The Great has done it in their cool, vintage-inspired way; I love either of these styles: The Nordic Sweater or The Nordic Scholar Cardigan.
If you want to embrace the knitwear trend while keeping the look chic and more toned-down, go playful with texture. Alpaca offers beautiful softness and depth. These options from Bare and Rachel Comey are so elegant. I layered mine with a Geel slip skirt and a Geel knit turtleneck cardigan for the perfect layered holiday style.
