Women's Denim Fit Guide Basics
Firstly, let's cover the basics with definitions on how to interpret denim terminology - think of this guide as a fashion jean-eology if you will:
Rise Distance from crotch seam to waistband. The higher the number, the higher they sit.
Inseam Length from crotch seam to hem. The number that decides full-length vs. ankle.
Leg opening Circumference at the hem — the clearest signal of how wide (or narrow) a leg is.
Wash The finish and colour treatment, from rigid raw indigo to broken-in and faded.
Straight On - Straight & Slim Cut Jean
When it comes to the women's denim fit guide, styling a straight leg jean is fairly straightforward! This cut is versatile and acts as the perfect backdrop for any ensemble and occasion. The wash is always helpful for establishing a vibe. Even if you're going to an elevated restaurant for a special occasion, a straight leg jean in light, medium, or dark wash can fit the bill. A straight leg is one of the ultimate workhorses for a wardrobe if your lifestyle tends to bounce around to various locations and occasions. Wear these jeans to school, to work, to school-drop off and dinner later that evening. A reliable straight leg makes preparing for all the twists and turns your day may have in store an easy and enjoyable process.
Our straight leg denim assortment at Hill's Dry Goods varies from wash, rise and fabric composition (for example, low-rise, medium wash, non-stretch). From clean ankle straights, to fluid trouser leg interpretations, here are the best straight leg cuts from our women's denim fit guide, including a few of our favourite dark indigo jeans for women this season.
The Mari Straight Jean in 3 Years Highrise from AG is the slimmest of the straight leg assortment with a leg opening of 13". The wash is a rich dark indigo and brings an effortless and elevated vibe to match the mid-rise, snug fit around the hips. At 98% Cotton, 2% Polyurethane composition, these are super comfortable and durable jeans. For a more relaxed look, try the Mari Straight Jean in 15 Years Shoreline. It's a lighter, more faded wash with the same rise, inseam and cut.
The 102 Tailored Jean in Vintage Light is a mid-rise trouser with a relaxed, elongated leg and fluid straight silhouette. Clean through the hip and designed to sit just below the natural waist for an effortless, tailored proportion. We love how these jeans are constructed with a trouser waistband, mid-rise, zip-fly and hook and bar button closure and slanted pockets for a true trouser pant. The fabric composition at 70% lyocell and 30% cotton are a perfect blend of ease and structure. The lyocell ensures these jeans are fluid, soft and drapey like traditional trousers but the cotton composition keeps them in check with just the right amount of structure.
These are classic, no BS straight leg jeans in a light vintage wash and dependable composition. For inspiration, Natalie Nelson (OKETO founder and designer) turned to the 90s where straight leg denim was the go-to silhouette. Designed to sit relaxed on the waist with an eased fit through the hip and thigh the 101 Straight jean is a clean hem, straight leg for a timeless, decade-driven shape crafted out of 100% Japanese denim.
The Low Rise Slim Jean from AGOLDE is a sleek, close to the body fit that sits low on the waist for a laid back silhouette. These are the type of jeans you can wear everyday of the week and with a slight stretch for comfort, they'll still keep their shape ready to return, day after day. The clean hem keeps the jean refined but the light-medium wash and low rise keep the relaxed look in check.
Frame has a way of creating a moment out of their jeans and The Hang does just that. In a soft rinse wash, the tailoring, stitching and hardware are all subtle but put together create an elevated straight leg that you can wear to dinner or a fancy brunch with a blouse or cozy sweater. They are meant to hang from the hips with enough room through the hip and thigh for comfortable, fluid fit and feel. These are never slouchy and always refined.
We call these a sharp straight because they nail it. The Kick It was designed for versatility and year-round wearability in a high-rise, 32" inseam and clean hem. The Kick It is similar to The Hang in terms of their sharp cut, clean hem, and elevated hardware. The Kick It can be dressed up with stilettos for night or heeled boots during the day and they'll ensure your legs can go the distance in these. Comfort and wearability are paramount with The Kick It so these are crafted from 78% Cotton, 16% Modal, 4% Polyester and 2% Elastane ensuring that you can wear these all day and night.
The Palma Straight - Citizens of Humanity
These are a beautiful clean cut, straight leg with a high rise and ankle-grazing length at 27.5" (depending on your height). We love the soft stretch, lightweight feel Citizens of Humanity is so well-known for and the Palma's do not disappoint. The Palma's move with you while never losing their shape. The Palma Straight features a 11" rise which translates to an easy mid-rise that can support any style of shirting and in a soft, washed-black, these are super versatile when it comes to styling.
The Mid Rise Rambler Zip Ankle - MOTHER
Like the Kick It, the Rambler Zip Ankle features a functional mid-rise and zip waist for an easy pull on and go moment if you're rushing out the door. We love the clean hem that can be paired with sneakers or heeled boots. The mid-blue wash and stretch denim ensure the Rambler can let you ramble on, all day long.
Time To Relax - Relaxed Jean
We can breathe a sigh of relief, the relaxed silhouette is back again this season and shows no signs of going anywhere for the foreseeable future! While we can get behind this cut, and get our behinds in them, we have bigger plans for the relaxed cut. In the spirit of a new season approaching and summer excursions winding down, maybe the relaxed cut will help manifest our moods for the next few weeks while we return to our routines for fall.
Characterized by measuring roomy through the hip and thigh for a laid-back, off-duty feel, you can rest assured, we have fabulous new arrivals in the relaxed cut in our women's denim fit guide.
The Low Rise Loose is a relaxed, low-slung silhouette with a full-length leg and easy drape. Vault is a medium indigo wash featuring subtle fading, whiskering, and marbling for that vintage wash denim feel and a broken-in look. Pair with anything from tonal denim to crisp shirting these are comfortable and flattering everyday jeans crafted from durable 100% regenerative cotton.
Available in an array of washes from blue, black to off-white, the Low Loose jeans are an example of versatile, go-to jeans that nail the nostalgic Y2K trend. They feature a full length, clean hem so while they sit low and loose, the clean hem keeps things elevated.
The Essential in Rapture are a cool take on the loose, straight leg silhouette. While they feature a clean hem, they're a rugged take on the loose fit while never wavering from a chic cut. The light wash and gentle fading give these jeans a vintage, western slant — a natural fit for workwear denim styling — and we love how these hang off the hips at a mid-rise of 11". Wear these with a denim shirt for an edgy denim on denim outfit or loosely tailored tee to complement the off-duty tone.
Winslow Boyfriend - Citizens of Humanity
It's time to introduce your parents and friends to the Winslow Boyfriend jeans from Citizens of Humanity. These low-rise boyfriends are polished and presentable with a tailored, ankle-grazing 29" inseam. Cut from a med-wash, rigid, non-stretch, no nonsense cotton - a dependable jean you can rely on to get you home by curfew. While the cotton seems rigid it has a soft handfeel, once you get to know it.
The Wide Leg Jean
Wide leg denim cuts have been around for ages and we love the subtle differences each generation imparts on this classic cut. They are characterized by having fuller volume through the leg from hip to hem and we're fortunate to get to enjoy our favourite designers' take on this classic cut heading into fall 2026.
Super high-waisted with a wide, curved leg and ankle-length inseam, MOTHER knows how to interpret 70s styles and the Half-Pipe Ankle is an example of their talents at fusing retro cuts into contemporary trends. These are 100% cotton making them a rigid cut and requiring patience to break in. We imagine these pairing with your favourite low-profile Adidas or high-profile classic like a Converse sneaker and ringer tee.
The Gray Jean - FRAME X Amelia Gray
The Gray Jean is a hot take on a low-slung wide-leg silhouette worn by Lisa Rinna, the mother of Amelia Gray. Amelia Gray and Frame teamed up to bring this particular cut back to life with a sexy take that feels very current, while honouring early Y2K fashion. We love the washes available in The Gray Jean, particularly Astral, a slightly faded black wash that can be dressed up or down, depending on your mood and occasion. A special design feature is the slightly higher back rise, compared to the front, ensuring comfort and wearability through and through.
Modern Pocket Wide Jean - Frame
The Modern Pocket Wide Jean from Frame strikes a perfect balance of easy and elevated. The utility-inspired pockets hint at workwear denim styling while super stretchy denim (77% Cotton/18.5% Modal/3.5% Elasterell-P/1% Elastane) offers extra comfort — proof that utility jeans styling doesn't have to sacrifice comfort or polish. Complement the high-rise waist with a leather belt and play up the full-length inseam with heels as a contrast to the utility look.
The Bootcut & Flare Jeans
Is there anything more classic or true Americana than bootcut blue jeans? Originating from the late 1800s, they were unofficially a big part of manual laborers' and farmhands' uniform due to the utility of design and durable denim. To read more about the history of denim, check out our Levi's and Hill's Dry Goods post for a little history lesson. Given their origin story, bootcut jeans are characterized by fitting through the hip and thigh and slightly widening out to fit over boots. These days, bootcut jeans are worn beyond their manufacturing and agricultural origins. Below are our favourite interpretations of this classic style.
Leave it to Frame to re-imagine a bootcut jean in a sexy, sleek cut. The Reboot Jeans are a clean and sleek cut in a high-rise waist, jutting out into a slight flare meant to hit the floor. These can be paired with anything from a flowy blouse to a tee shirt and blazer and statement necklace for ultimate impact. While the cut hugs close to the body in a stretch denim, the wash is a deep black, serving as a sexy backdrop to an ensemble.
The Rodeo Jean, available in Spirit, is a low-rise, hip hugging silhouette that breaks into a true long-legged, bootcut jean. These feel like a hybrid of 70s, rugged western, and 90s grunge and we love Frame's interpretation.
Genova Low Rise Boot - Citizens of Humanity
The Genova Low Rise Boot from Citizens of Humanity is a refined version of the Rodeo Jeans while remaining true to the classic bootcut silhouette. They fall into a sleek, elongated leg finished with a clean hemline. The relaxed vibe comes from the slouchy top block, so you can keep your cool.
The Barrel Jean
It seemed like barrel jeans exploded from out of nowhere and took the fashion industry by storm. While there have been many interpretations, the actual origin of the barrel leg silhouette comes from over 100 years ago. It was a combination of European workwear and riding habits that created a cinched waist, bow leg and tapered silhouette. Leave it to the Europeans to dream up a chic denim cut you didn’t know you needed. For a contemporary take on this cut, we turned to Citizens of Humanity and OKETO to show us how it's done.
The Miro Jean and Miro Long Jean - Citizens of Humanity
The Miro Jeans are a tailored take on the barrel jean, and while they maintain the overall silhouette, they have a slouchy yet tailored cut that can swing towards a chill relaxed cabin vibe with a cozy sweater or refined look you can wear to the office with heeled boots. We love the subtle taper at the legs and that the Miros can be worn in a shorter inseam or longer to suit the wearer's body type and preference. Available in an assortment of light to dark blue and soft white.
When we think back to the origin story of the barrel jean and curvature of the inseam, OKETO is where we turn to for that true interpretation. The 103 is available in Vintage Dark - a vintage wash with subtle whiskering for that je ne sais quoi. The ankle tapers closer to the hem as a nod to the utilitarian origins.

FAQ's
What denim washes are trending for fall 2026? This season leans into indigo — rinse washes, dark indigo, and dirty vintage finishes with visible whiskering and fading are the standouts across our COH, FRAME, AGOLDE and OKETO edit. Deep, rigid indigo pairs especially well with the barrel and wide leg silhouettes trending for 2026.
How do you style denim on denim without looking dated? Mix washes and weights rather than matching them — pair a dark indigo straight leg with a lighter chambray or rinse-wash jacket, and keep the rest of the outfit simple so the denim on denim outfit isn't too matchy-matchy.
What is the difference between rinse wash and dark indigo denim? A rinse wash is a single, light wash after dyeing that keeps the denim close to its raw colour with a clean, almost uniform finish, like Frame's The Hang. Dark indigo denim, like AG's Mari in 3 Years Highrise, has been dyed and treated for a deeper, richer tone with more depth and less contrast.
How should vintage wash utility jeans fit? Vintage wash and utility-inspired jeans, like OKETO's 103 Barrel Jean or Frame's Modern Pocket Wide Jean, are designed to sit true to size through the hip with room to move. They're meant to soften and mold to your body over time, so avoid sizing down for a snug fit.
What are the best luxury denim brands for women? Citizens of Humanity, AGOLDE, Frame, AG Jeans, Mother and OKETO are the brands we consistently return to at Hill's Dry Goods for their fit, fabric quality and wash development. All available as part of our women's designer denim edit in Vancouver.
